Kandeh K. Yumkella,
PHD ’91 ACES, is the director-general of the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization and former Minister of Trade, Industry and State Enterprises
for his native country, Sierra Leone. With more than 20 years of experience in
international development, Yumkella is recognized internationally for his leadership
of initiatives to stimulate sustainable growth in the developing world, reduce
poverty, improve health and promote the rational use of resources. His lecture, “Achieving
the Millennium Development Goals in a Changing Global Climate,” will address
what is being done to help the poorest countries.

Caitlin Caruso Dobbs, an eighth-grader at Urbana Middle School, is a young
talent with a long list of musical credits that include piano performances in “Ragtime,” “Beauty
and the Beast,” “The Music Man” and “The Sound of Music.” Caitlin
will be joined by Rick Murphy, piano accompanist and director of music at University
High School, for a cabaret-style performance of familiar old songs. The UI Alumni
Association’s very own Dan Perrino ’48 FAA, MS ’49
FAA, will handle master-of-ceremony duties at this music program that’s
guaranteed to put great songs into your heart and a kick to your step!
Annual Bus Trip to the Little Theatre and Buffet Dinner at the Sullivan
Country Club

Enjoy a performance of the musical “West Side Story” and a scrumptious
dinner at the Sullivan Country Club during the heart of summer. The popular musical
explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic and cultural
backgrounds. Tony, the young protagonist who belongs to the white gang, falls
in love with Maria, sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang. Leonard
Bernstein’s well-known score includes the classics “Maria,” “Somewhere,” “Tonight” and “I
Feel Pretty.
