MEET YOUR CAREER COUNSELORS

Buckman
|
Mary Anne Buckman, Claudia Delestowicz and Julie Hays '90 LAS not only organize seminars and P2P events, they spend their time doing what each loves best: helping University of Illinois alumni fashion fulfilling careers. They also laugh a lot.
Mary Anne Buckman
Buckman has been providing career services for nearly two decades, helping "displaced homeowners," the city of Detroit and various corporations before launching Joliet Community College's career services center. She has been serving as vice president of the Alumni Career Center for two and a half years. "I need to help, whatever I do," she said.
Key advice: "Networking is the name of the game," Buckman said. "The good [jobs] that are out there almost always are filled by somebody who knows somebody."
Word on the street: David Marren '86 LAS said, "Mary Anne really coached me on how to take advantage of the experience I was getting."

Delestowicz
|
Claudia Delestowicz
Associate Director Delestowicz is fascinated by people's careers, whether she's helping develop them or not. When photographer Roberta Dupuis-Devlin arrived to capture the ACC on film, Delestowicz quizzed her on how she keeps current in her profession, shouting, "Yes!" when Dupuis-Devlin mentioned reading
professional journals and staying on top of technology. "I like helping people find a better way in their own world of work," Delestowicz said, "helping them realize their dreams but also keep things grounded."
Key advice: "Be true to yourself. It's a process. You don't have to figure it all out at one time. And take action," Delestowicz said.
Word on the street: Ellen Zalewski MPA '91 (UIS) , said, "Claudia pretty much steered me to getting a regular life."

Hays
|
Julie Hays
Associate Director Hays was a senior majoring in psychology at the Urbana campus when she took a class on career development. "I liked it so much, I wanted to help other people do it," Hays said. She was an adviser at Iowa State University before returning to her native Chicagoland area, where she has been an Alumni Career Center counselor for seven years.
Key advice: "It's a real detriment just to put a resume on the Web and wait," said Hays. "You can't ignore [the Web], but you also can't rely on it."
Word on the street: Elizabeth Forkins Harano '80 LAS said, "Everything she told me, frankly, was helpful."
