2009 Recipients

Nancy L. Chapin

Nancy L. Chapin, MA ’73 EHS
Working as a volunteer in her community and a charter member of the Sangamon State University Alumni Association, Nancy L. Chapin has made many significant contributions to the University. Her service includes becoming the founding member of both the Friends of Brookens Library Board and the UIS Alumni SAGE Society. A lifelong learner, Chapin is a frequent participant in several campus programs each year, and she and her husband have established funding for the UIS Outstanding Master's Thesis Award, as well as a history scholarship. As an active member of the Sangamon County Historical Society and the Iles House Foundation, Chapin has helped lay the groundwork for joint programs between the community and UIS. Additionally, thanks to a keen appreciation of classical music, Chapin is a supporter of NPR affiliate WUIS and that station's classical music audience. This involvement has led to outstanding classical musicians visiting Springfield, as well as enhanced visibility for WUIS.

Roberta Volkmann

Roberta Volkmann, MA ’73 LAS
An exceptional grant writer and volunteer leader, Roberta Volkmann is a founding member of the UIS Alumni SAGE Society, has chaired two associated committees and provided service to the UIS Homecoming Committee. Additionally, she has recruited alumni volunteers to assist with UIS Commencement, and was among the first to offer her time and talents to interview alumni for a campus legacy project. Volkmann’s understanding of the importance of alumni loyalty, commitment and involvement is exemplified by her actions. In Springfield, she is a volunteer grant writer for the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and involved with the Illinois State Historical Society and her church choir. She and her husband, Carl, wrote “Springfield’s Sculptures, Monuments, and Plaques,” which was published in 2008.
