The Ricker Circle
We
are pleased to introduce the current members of the Ricker Circle, an honorary
society recognizing alumni and friends who have demonstrated their generous support
through cumulative lifetime gifts to the University of Illinois Alumni Association
equaling $2,500 or more. The society is named in honor of Nathan C. Ricker, the
second Alumni Association president and designer of the distinctive UIAA emblem
which was initially worn as an alumni badge of pride.
Each Ricker Circle member receives a specially cast Ricker Circle lapel pin/pendant adorned by Nathan Ricker's original badge design, which is enhanced with a crystal signifying the donor's level of recognition. Blue crystals — representing the common color that unites the Chicago, Springfield, and Champaign-Urbana campuses — signify Sapphire Recognition ($2,500-14,999).
Golden crystals signify Topaz Recognition ($15,000-24,999).
Clear crystals enhance Diamond Recognition pins, our highest recognition level for donors whose contributions have exceeded $25,000.
Thank you to Jill B. Smart ’81 bus (UI) and Stephen D. Smart ’84 bus (UIC) for their service as the Ricker Circle Class of 2011 Sponsors.

Nathan
C. Ricker built a legacy of excellence, innovation and philanthropy during his
45 years of service to the University of Illinois. Ricker was the first collegiate
architectural graduate in the United States, founder and first chair of the architecture
department, dean of engineering on the Illinois campus and served as the second
Alumni Association president. Ricker's legacy still stands in the buildings he
designed as the University architect – Altgeld Hall, Harker Hall, the Natural
History Building and Kenney Gym, among them. His personal collection of important
architectural treatises, folios, photographs and first editions formed the basis
of the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art which has grown into a substantial
and respected collection today.
Inspired by Alhambra at Granada, Spain, Ricker designed the octagonal shaped star motif accented with the decorative "UI" that now serves as the University of Illinois Alumni Association logo. His name and the emblem he created are now the foundation of the Alumni Association's highest level of donor recognition – Ricker Circle.
