Coaches and Players,
I've been watching Fighting Illini basketball since WCIA started carrying the games way back when. I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this season. Thank you so much for your efforts and for being the class of the NCAA.

Bob
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for such a wonderful, magical season! I don't know when I've been prouder to be an Illinois alumna! I wore orange and blue so much this winter, my husband worried that people would think I didn't have anything else in my closet. Living in Iowa, you can bet it got noticed! my friends made endless comments about my e-mail signature, which was in orange and blue lettering and kept count of the team's record, followed by "March to the Arch — Go Illini"! I still have the "March to the Arch" collage as my computer's wallpaper and numerous images from the season as screensavers. The Arizona game will always stand out as the most memorable game EVER, but there were so many thrills along the way. You accomplished so much and made the entire nation take notice of just what TEAM play is all about — we couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate 100 years of Illinois basketball. Please don't dwell on what might have been — no other team in the country can equal your record and all you did. And 37-2, with the two losses by a total of 6 points, is an enviable record that will be hard for anyone to duplicate. To all of us fans, you will always be the No. 1 team in college basketball for 2004-2005. Still loyal to you, Illinois!

Never before in 23 years as a gainfully employed graduate of the University of Illinois have I paid an inflated, after-market price for tickets and then flown, on short notice, from California to Chicago to attend an athletic event. But this Illini team inspired that kind of irrational commitment, and I will forever cherish the memory of joining some twenty thousand other Illinois alumni at the United Center for Illinois' Big Ten Tournament victory.

At game's end, the Illini assembled in a small circle, formed an even tighter circle with their raised arms, and gave thanks for their good fortune. A young lady not far from us in the none-too-cheap seats shouted, "I love you, Roger!"

Clearly, for all of us this last season was about a lot more than basketball.

I look forward to keeping up with the pursuits and achievements of this team — those who are staying, as well as those who are moving on. I think I speak for many, if not most, Illini when I say that the experience of watching you guys rubbed off on me in unimaginable ways — inspiring me to be better at what I do and to represent the University proudly at all times.

Thanks to Coach Weber and the players for the exhilarating lesson in dedication, teamwork, belief, devotion and faith.

Congratulations to the 2004-2005 Fighting Illini basketball team! I've never been so proud to be an alumna as I was this year. Watching the teamwork that you guys showed game after game was amazing. You truly showed everyone in the nation why they call our team the "Fighting" Illini. You will always be the No. 1 team in my book. Congrats and good luck wherever you are off to next!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for a season that has made me even prouder to wear the Orange and Blue. What impressed me most about your performance was the classy way in which you conducted yourselves. Game in and game out, all of you represented our fine state and University with exemplary behavior and dignity.

Coach Weber, your leadership has taken this program to the next level of excellence. Your handling of troubling situations helped set the tone for this glorious past year. Thank you for inspiring a number of youngsters across this land who hope to someday wear "Illinois" across their chests and play their hearts out for you as well.

As for the players, in my mind and heart I will always consider you the best< college basketball team in the nation for 2004-05. You guys were simply phenomenal. Here's to continued success and future championships!

Oskee Wow Wow! Go Illini!

Christopher Hughes, M.D. Class of 1994
April 23, 2005: It's taken me this long to be able to come to this site and read all these wonderful posts and include one myself. I knew it would bring the tears and it has, but not from sadness (ok, maybe a little) but really from so much pride and joy for this team and the fact that I am a University of Illinois alumna — and that makes all of us very special indeed.

I had the privilege of attending the Big Ten Tournament and Final Four games. Sharing those experiences with so many clad in orange will always be precious memories for me. I wish the team could have been outside the stadium after the National Championship game. While all our hearts were breaking, I couldn't help smiling being around so many people in orange still yelling "I-L-L, I-N-I."

Depending on the game, the moment and the shot, I have certainly loved each and every team member "the most" this fabulous season, but I have to mention the fact that Jack became my absolute favorite because of the example he set over the course of his time at the U of I. I think the thing I will miss most of all next season will be the fact that I won't be able to yell, "That's my boy, Jack!" after one of the contributions he was sure to make when he came off the bench this season (causing the steal and making the screen in the Arizona game, to name two very important examples).

I also want to thank Coach Weber and his staff for their courage this year in the face of personal and professional challenges. I hope you will be our coach for many, many years to come.

Of course, best of luck to all the team members in the years ahead. If Brian Cook can turn me into a Lakers' fan, there's no telling what you guys will do!

Finally, I wanted to say that, although I am in Columbia, S.C., now and am surrounded by SEC football fans and ACC basketball fans, I take a great deal of pride in wearing my UI Loyalty bracelet every day and displaying all the Fighting Illini pictures, articles and memorabilia on my office door (which faces a UNC fan) and shelves and walls. The season may be over, but the fabulous memories of this team and the 100th year of Illini Basketball will last a lifetime.

Congratulations to Coach Weber, the assistant coaches and the Fighting Illini basketball team on a great season. I am a longtime Illini fan, and my two children are proud wearers of the orange and blue. Their team loyalty can be somewhat of a challenge for them, however, since we live in Indiana, the land of the Hoosiers and Boilermakers! We had so much fun following the team's progress this past season and scheduled our lives as much as we could around game times. We didn't want to miss a minute because we could sense Illini history was going to be made. We were privileged to see the Illini defeat Gonzaga in November at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and we also cheered them on at the first-round NCAA tournament games at the RCA Dome in March. My 11-year-old son will never forget the experience of watching those games and seeing his favorite college basketball players (and coach) in person. Thank you, Illini, for your inspirational play throughout the entire season. You made all your fans proud. I have no doubt that the Arizona victory will stand for decades as one of the most thrilling and inspirational comeback wins in the history of college basketball. I have such a positive feeling about the future of Illinois basketball with Coach Weber at the helm. Thanks, coaches and players, for all the great memories! GO ILLINI!

Thank you to all the members of the 2004-2005 Fighting Illini men's basketball team. Thank you also to coaches Weber, McClain, Price and Webster.

You gave Illini fans a season to remember! I went to the last four games of the season, including the Final Four games. It is incredible to think that we were only 6 points from a national championship. What a fun year.

The spirit, heart, never-give-up attitude and unselfishness of this team was unbeatable and very praiseworthy.

Thank you again for the memories. Hopefully, this is just the start of great Illini basketball memories, and, hopefully there will be many more seasons to celebrate as recruits and parents of recruits continue to realize how special a place Illinois is, how special the players are, and how excellent Bruce Weber is!

Go Illini!

Honestly, every March all I can do is wait through the basketball season for baseball to start. This is the first time in years that I got March Madness! I watched your team in awe and was floored that I could feel the fire for someone other than the Cubs! Thanks for adding some basketball moments to some of my favorites sports memories! You guys are truly No. 1!

Way to go Illini! We are so proud of you. Living in Winston-Salem, N.C., we were so excited when you beat Wake Forest. Then you just kept on going! Our Illini flag was flying proudly throughout the season and the tournament. Congratulations to all of you, you showed the world what true champions look like. I-L-L ... I-N-I! What an incredible season! With all of your humility, unselfishness and composure on and off the court, I truly believe you had everyone in the country cheering for you. It made me extremely proud to be an alumni.

I had the pleasure of attending the regional Final, as well as the Final Four. My daughters (7 and 5 years old) think itÍs totally awesome to live in the same town as Augie.

What an incredible year! Thank you for the amazing ride. You guys showed such class, heart and spirit, and you really epitomize what the UI experience is all about. You've become winners by working together as a team and continuing the great basketball tradition by extending it to uncharted waters.

While watching the championship game in Mexico, everybody in the place was wearing orange. My two-year-old thinks his blood is orange-and-blue thanks to this team.
(He says, 'Go go go, Illini' and 'Dee for three!' whenever he sees a basketball game.) Thanks again, and Go Illini!

It has been one of the greatest years in basketball for the Illini. I succeeded in making new Illini fans out of many by giving orange shirts to my son's 8th grade basketball team. Congratulations on the greatest Fighting Illini basketball season. It was a thrill to watch and follow the Illini through their 37-2 season. You are truly a team that worked together with no one player expecting recognition.

Roger, you are an inspiration to all, young and old, with your witness to God. Stay strong in your faith!

Every day after work I had a reason to watch sports because I knew ESPN could not afford to stop talking about my beloved team, the Illini. My co-workers were forced to accept my office decor for at least four months (orange and blue), even though they were, for the most part, Hoosier fans (you know — people from Indiana). Oh well! The season is over and I do not know what to do before we can get back to watching the best team again next year. However, if I never get a chance to see my Illini team go that far, I will always have a story to tell my kids about this formidable, genial team from 2005.

Thank you, guys, for making me so proud that I displayed my No. 1 T-shirt for four months.

To this year's Fighting Illini,

We knew this would be a fun year and you didn't disappoint. I've been an Illini fan for as long as I can remember and my whole family cheers for you every year — win or lose. But we were extra proud to be bleeding orange and blue this year. Thanks for showing us what determination, teamwork and a little bit of faith can do. My husband and I have been season ticket holders for basketball since Fall 1989 (just missed the Flyin' Illini), and have always enjoyed the games. This season, however, has been one amazing experience after another. What a blast! The Northwestern game, at which the fans started spontaneously doing The Wave with even the players joining in, was just ... exuberant. I have never felt that way at a game, ever. I also witnessed in person the amazing long sequence of passes (during which the ball never touched the floor) that the media talked about for weeks. The crowd was literally speechless. As the sequence got longer, we just 'oohed' and 'aahed.' I have never heard or seen a reaction like that at a basketball game. Uusally you hear crowd reactions for spectacular dunks, steals, etc., but not for a long series of passes! We knew we were witnessing something very special.

What a classy group of young guys, led by a truly classy coach. Thank you, Coach Weber. And thank you to Dee, Deron, James, Luther, Roger and ALL the players for being an inspiration, not only as athletes, but as people.

On Tuesday he showed up waving a Tar Heel 'We're No. 1' finger in everyone's face. He doesn't have a clue about being No. 1, but you guys do. Thanks for a great season. THANK YOU to all the players and coaches for an incredible season! You should be very proud of yourselves — not just for the number of Ws, but for the WAY you won. You are everything that's right about college athletics. You are a true team. You are unselfish and supportive of each other. You never gave up. And you handled all the pressure and all the success you had with grace and dignity. No trash talking, no excessive celebration whenever you hit a shot. It wasn't only winning that was exciting to see — it was the team spirit and the determination, as well as a true team effort. It is hard for me to put into words how I feel about the 100th season of Fighting Illini basketball. Only true Illini fans can understand the profound respect and pride I have for Coach Weber, his gifted assistants and the talented young men that made up this year's very special team.

Your accomplishments on and off the court have made the University of Illinois a more attractive institution of higher learning to scores of prospective students who, before now, may have taken the U of I for granted. This year's success on the hardwood will have untold benefits for the University for years to come. Thank you for your hard work and congratulations on your success, but most of all, thanks for being such outstanding ambassadors for my beloved alma mater.

As I scrolled through the message board, I was astounded to discover that even a brigadier general is a big Illini fan. The enormous global influence of our great university extends far beyond our borders through the everyday efforts of alumni. We all remember how hard we worked to achieve our goals in school, and that is part of why we are so proud of the 100th season of basketball, and the coaches, players, managers and fans who made it happen. I am most proud when I read of our high graduation rate, Jack's great GPA in EE, and Dee getting a degree in three years. The level of adoration and attention is important not only to the future success of all of our sports teams, but also to the academic and public service missions of the University. You handled the media frenzy with class and dignity, an obvious reflection of Coach Weber and his assistants. Coach Weber, you are a regular guy, and we are so proud you are leading our team, teaching every second. The Arizona game defined the spirit of the Fighting Illini that you carried forward for all of us throughout the season. For that, we will be forever indebted to you all. Thank you all for your hard work, dedication, desire and commitment in representing the University of Illinois. It was an amazing, wonderful ride!

As a proud alumna living deep in the heart of ACC territory, I cannot tell you how rewarding it has been to watch the gutsy, graceful and good, old-fashioned brand of college basketball you uniquely brought to the game this year. I will always be proud to be an Illini and will forever trumpet the infinite offerings of the University. The heart, humility and courage you displayed week in and week out on the court represented an eloquent new way to communicate what it means to be a part of the University of Illinois family and tradition. Thank you for being such a vibrant (orange!) mouthpiece for our University and for being the truest of champions to our Illini Nation.

Coach Weber, thank you for a wonderful season. Since I'm an old high school coach, I really enjoyed watching the Illini perform. The passing offense should be a model for every high school team in the nation. You brought back the "team" aspect to basketball that has been gone for so many years. It was very enjoyable to just watch them move and make the extra pass for the best shot. That says a lot about how you coach. I also enjoyed watching the defense. I believe it was the best in the nation this year. The way they would double team and then cover the outlet passes was something to watch. I look forward to many more years of watching the Illini under your direction. By the way, I'm from West Frankfort in southern Illinois and don't get to all the games. I was Lance Brown's underclass coach many years ago. He played for you at SIU.

Enjoy the summer and best of luck next year. It will be here before you know it. Isn't coaching fun at times?

WOW! What an awesome basketball season. We have all been blessed to witness such a wonderful team this year. Coach Weber's leadership was spectacular, the team's unselfishness and hard work was untouched by any other team in the country. But the thing that impressed me most was the way these young men handled themselves with their wins and successes and their adversity. They were not boastful about themselves, and they showed great character and integrity. This team showed more class and character in their loss in the national championship than North Carolina did in their win. They were very clearly the "BEST TEAM" in the nation this year. I want to thank Coach Weber for his resolve and faith in Luther Head last year. Luther has turned into one of the finest young men I have met and showed how proper guidance, hard work and dedication can affect one's future. Roger Powell's faith in God and willingness to express it publicly and to pray for and with the team was influential on this team and for many supporters, both young and old. I want us all to remember that we have been truly blessed by a wonderful and caring coach and a special group of young men more concerned about each other than themselves. Thank you, Bruce, and all the coaches and players, for a season to remember.

WE'RE LOYAL TO YOU, ILLINOIS.

You were up more than 30 points against Wake, had Cincy so frustrated at one point they could hardly inbound the ball, methodically outplayed a Final Four Louisville team, ended a long win streak in Madison, Wisc., and trailed in the score for just a few minutes all season, etc., etc., etc.! It wasn't just a great year, but a DOMINANT year! Easy to see why some in the media spend so much rhetoric putting us down while defending their favorites!

In early January, my family visited Walt Disney World. I wore my Illinois baseball cap and lost count of how many students, alumni and just people from Illinois would stop and want to talk basketball. One day on the bus to the park, a grandmother toward the back of the bus was telling her granddaughter about Michigan State and how good a basketball team they had. A gentleman with a Cincinnati sweatshirt sitting across the aisle from me shot me a big grin. I stood up just enough so everyone could see my Illinois cap and asked, "Does someone back there want to talk basketball?" That brought the bus down!

So many fun experiences from all of the notoriety. Thanks to ALL of our coaches and players. What a TEAM. Just remember how EVERYONE contributed mightily to the victory over the No. 1 (at the time) Demon Deacons.

I cannot wait until next year.

Dear Fighting Illini players and coaches,

THANK YOU FOR A TREMENDOUS YEAR! You have brought so much joy into my life through your unselfish team play and outstanding team spirit. You make me so proud to be an ILLINI! Even though I no longer reside in Illinois (but considered moving back to be part of the fun), I wear my orange proudly and have converted many of my friends and students into Illini fans. I even have a couple of students who would like to wear Illini orange on the court! Your fantastic efforts will go down in history, and it will be a year that will not be forgotten by this Illini faithful. Luther, Roger, Jack, Nick, congratulations on graduating and all of my best wishes for your future. Deron, Dee and James, we are looking for great things from you next year! To the rest of the crew, step up and make next year's season just as exciting. Coach Weber, you did an outstanding job and we're proud you'll be wearing your orange blazer for many seasons to come.

What an unbelievable season! I am from Urbana and graduated from the University of Illinois. I have long been entwined in Illini athletics, and this was the most amazing experience. I live in Colorado now and had to watch most of the season from afar, but I was lucky enough to attend the Northwestern game in Chicago and Senior Night against Purdue. On top of that, I drove to St. Louis for the Final Four and was able to get tickets and see both games. Your passion and desire is inspiring, and the only reason I was sad at the end of the final game was because the season was over. I had so much emotionally invested in this season (I have worn an Illini shirt EVERY DAY since the Wake Forest game, and I promised to do so until one day after the season), and I really felt like I was a part of the great run. Thank you so much for all you did for the fans and the University. I will never forget.

To Coach Weber and the GREAT Illini basketball team,

What else can I possibly say to add to the wonderful messages that I have read here? I have to admit that I shed tears of pride reading the kind words that Illini fans from all over have taken the time to share. You all must be so proud. I, too, was there in 1989 when the Flying Illini went to the Final Four, but I can't remember feeling any more proud than I did this year of our outstanding team. What an impact you've made on so many people!

I have to admit that I was disappointed to hear that some of our team may be entering the draft, though I understand that you have to do what's best for you. Please know that we still will be cheering you on, wherever you are. Once an Illini, always an Illini. May God bless you in whatever path you take.

Although I was not fortunate enough to attend either of the games in St. Louis, I did attend the practice session on Friday. I work two blocks from the Dome and it felt like I walked that two blocks right to Champaign. I could hardly tell that the other three teams had any fans in attendance at all. The Edward Jones Dome was so full of orange it was intoxicating. You could just feel the Illini pride. It was certainly a rush for me, and I sure hate that it's over. Thanks for the ride. It was one that will never be forgotten.

As I stood in the stands and watched a magical season close, it was bittersweet — not for the outcome of one game, but for knowing this team of great character would be together no more. It was difficult to see something so special end, because Illini Nation knew all along what the rest of the nation has since accepted — that the true character of this great team was not measured by the final score of the final game but by the incredible heart it displayed all season long, especially when needed most. To the 2004-2005 Fighting Illini — you left an indelible mark on this diehard fan by providing an everlasting example of strength, endurance, belief and the will to never give up and fight to the very end.

Congratulations to the entire team, coaches, support staff and fans for a season to remember and the very classy way all conducted themselves. Living in St. Louis, I can tell you the Illini owned this town and painted it a bright orange. I had many people not associated with the University come up to me and say how much they enjoyed the team and were pulling for us to win it all. GO ILLINI!

Before I ended my workday on Monday, I pulled up MSN to see what was written about the game. A gentleman by the name of Decourcy for Sporting News had written an article entitled "Myth vs. Reality." This was my e-mail reply I sent to him:

"I enjoyed reading your article that was posted on MSN. You mentioned several things that make or compose a good team. The one item that was overlooked was developing players who play with HEART — ones that are unselfish. This Illinois team, by far, outwins it all on unselfishness. "Heart" or "passion" or whatever you want to call it provides an edge over any team. Coach Weber has tapped into this and uses it to the team's advantage. These players are not in the game to see how many NBA scouts will open their eyes and view them as a draft potential — they love to play the game."

GO ILLINI!

What an unbelieveable season! As a kid in Urbana High School in the '40s, I was thrilled with the Whiz Kids, Andy Phillip, Ken Menke, Gene Vance, Jack Smiley and Art Mathieson ... but this ILLINI team is second to none.

Coach Weber has created a team that has provided memories for years to come.

Disappointed? Let me ask you, would you accept a 37-2 record next season?

Good luck, Coach Weber, and GO ILLINI!

To the whole team, Coach Weber and staff,

My husband and I are both proud graduates of the U of I. We've been Fighting Illini basketball fans for more than 25 years. This year, with our children, we watched almost every minute of every single game on television and were able to go to several of them. We have loved it all. We could not be more proud of the team, our fantastic coach and our excellent school. Thank you so much for so many great basketball moments and happy, shared, family times that we will never forget. You honored the word "team" and you honored the U of I, both on and off the court.

Thank you for such a thrilling year. It was quite a run, and I am so proud of the team! I have watched the Illini and, in particular, this team for the past three years. I have lived in northern Kentucky for more than 20 years — the heart of SEC and University of Kentucky fans. I have found every opportunity to watch the Illini play (especially Dee Brown and Deron Williams). My husband (UK graduate) and both of my boys are now big Illini fans. You have absolutely captured our hearts and new fans everywhere. I can't tell you how proud I am of the team, our school, our fans. You are a first-class operation.

My family and I were on a cruise for Game 4 and traveling back from Florida for game 5, and we found a way to watch the games. In fact, last Saturday night, at a Hooters off of I-75 in Macon, Georgia, you could find 12 Illini fans with their orange on, cheering on the Illini. We were all on our way home from spring break, but had to find a place to watch our beloved team.

I so hope that Dee, Deron and James can stay and play at Illinois for their senior year. You all have captured our hearts and rebuilt our spirit and we owe you so much for that. Thanks, Coach Weber, for all your hard work, determination and vision. You are all champions and we love you!

Dear Fighting Illini,

Thanks for many shining moments all season. You exemplified more than just athletic skill (god-given talents that you took to the highest level). You showed us that hard work, loyalty and teamwork are the road to success.

I am married to an Illini grad ('76), and we are a great merger! He is a third-generation Illini. We both bleed blue and orange, and we live in Buckeye country. (Yes, we were in Columbus, wearing orange with pride before and after the game.) We went to Indianapolis for the first and second rounds of the tournament and actually bought our tickets in January. (Cocky? No, just smart!) We brought two of our children to see the games and they couldn't get over the total overwhelming spirit and pride. ('There's orange everywhere, Mom!') My 15-year-old refers to Dee Brown as her 'future husband.' Class of 2012, watch out ... the fourth generation is on its way!

Bruce, thank you for your candor, leadership, grace and class. You are amazing, and our young men are blessed to have you at the helm.

Players, from the starting five to the support for the future, we will never forget you. Thank you for never giving up. Thanks for showing the youth of today that teamwork has no "i" in it (except if you are talking Illini, of course!). We will never forget the games ... the way you fought ... the knowing smiles in the last two minutes of a close game that seemed to say 'just watch us, we are not going away.'"

Thank you for publicly acknowledging your fans whenever you could. I hope we never let you down because you ALWAYS made us proud.

Finally and most importantly, to next year's starting five, get ready 'cause orange crush pride will prevail.

We are loyal to you, Illinois.

All members of the team were wonderful. If you have ever seen the movie "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken," you might remember that Don Knotts played a guy named Luther. When he gave a speech, someone in the audience would yell, "Atta boy, Luther!" My son and I had a great time together these past few years yelling every time Luther Head made a basket. I will miss yelling, "Atta boy, Luther!"

I have lived in Wisconsin for the past five years, so it was great beating them three times, as well as UW-Milwaukee. I do get comments when I wear orange and blue. There were a lot of temporary Illinois fans during the tournament because they realized we were a TEAM. I suppose Bruce Weber knows that he has created a monster (a good kind). Good luck, Team, wherever you go from here.

To Coach Weber and the Illini team:
Thank you for a tremendous season. I live in southern Illinois and am, of course, a Saluki fan, but I am also a Illini fan. I have followed the Illini team since last season and I noticed something very different about them that no other team had — that was the essence of teamwork, an unselfish loyalty and love for each other and Coach Weber that I had never seen before. This is what defines the word "team." Not seen in some of the closest of families, it was obvious in this Illini team.

You are the greatest team that I have witnessed in my lifetime. You are the champions in college basketball this season, and you will live on in the record books as one of the greatest teams of all time. What a record, what an accomplishment. There should be a trophy for the greatest team of the season. Because, isn't this what basketball is all about — teaching people to work together against all odds, becoming great because the individuals care for each other?

To all the players:
Luther, you were simply great. When you started swishing the three-pointers, there was just no one out there better; the steals you made were awesome; and I could tell when you wanted the team to win and I would see you do the impossible. When you would shoot, my wife and I would shout out your name until the ball went through the net. And Dee, wow! — the speed, the steals, the three-point bank shots — you really went where no man had gone before. Deron, you never let us down — you controlled the game, you drove, you got the ball to who needed it, you hit the great three-pointers, you were truly the captain of the team. Roger, thank you for the inspiration and the strength that God gave you and the team, for your faith was almost beyond belief. You rebounded, you hit the three-pointers, you dunked, you believed, and it could not have happened without you. And James, the rebounds, the slams, the impossible shots you made, the high jumps — absolutely incredible. To all the other players who made the shots when they needed to and did what had to be done — it was fantastic.

I wish I could see all of you back next season. Some of you will go on to the NBA and some to other professions, but you will never forget where you came from.

And finally to Coach Weber, I saw how you transformed the Saluki team and you were a godsend. You always will be regarded as one of the greatest coaches. Your plays and your philosophy molded this group of good basketball players into a GREAT TEAM and GREAT PLAYERS who made history. To you and all the players, good luck with next season wherever it goes, and God bless.

I currently live in the heart of ACC country in Florida, and nothing has made me happier this year than to be able to cheer on the Fighting Illini to an unforgettable season! Ironically I am dating a Tar Heel and I hoped all season that we would not have to play them — but, of course, my wish didn't come true! But as I walked into a sports bar Monday night I realized that no matter how good the UNC program is, they would never be able to match the unity, dedication and teamwork that my precious Illinois team had!

You guys have truly taken the University to a higher level, and every time I heard 'that's a three' or saw the Orange Crush on TV, I felt a little closer to home, a little less homesick and VERY proud to be an alumna of what I consider to be the best university out there! Thank you for all of the memories and an unforgettable year!

To the Fighting Illini basketball team,

I wish to extend a big 'congratulations,' and I know I speak for all Illinois fans around the globe! You captivated us all season long with your unselfish play, camaraderie, sportsmanship and fabulous play — We are all very proud of what you have accomplished in this 100th year of Illinois basketball! I am not sure there will ever be another team in Illinois history that will embrace each other like brothers, as you all have this season. Please know that you are all very special — You will leave this University with a fabulous education and a sense of accomplishment, both on and off the court.

You know you have united a community this year — You would all smile if you could have seen my son's daycare class of three- and four-year-olds all wearing their orange-and-blue attire all season on game days, and in those little voices saying, 'Go Illini!' You have inspired spirit and loyalty in all — young and old!

I believe the Carrie Busey Elementary School sign on Kirby Avenue today said it all: "Thanks for the journey."

We will never forget this magical season.

Webster defines inspiration as 'an influence on one's feelings.'

How can one experience this season's Illinois basketball team, coaches and staff and not be inspired? From the countless highs to the lowest low (only one I can think of — and only because we all wanted it so much for you, the team and coaches), you have had such a profound effect on anyone who watched you play. There can be nothing but respect and admiration for your talent, unselfishness and passion for the game and reaching your goals.

You have been such an inspiration ... I wish you, the seniors, all the success in the world in your futures, be it the NBA or your life's ambitions. You have given us the unique privilege of sharing your dream and accompanying you on the journey of a lifetime. You are a class act and have displayed yourselves honorably and respectfully throughout the season.

You have been such an inspiration ... I say to you, the starting five, you RULE! There is nothing we, the fans, could have asked that you did not give. You have given the other Illini players an undisputed example of unselfishness and loyalty to follow. For those of you considering the NBA draft, God speed, and our hearts and blessings go with you. WE LOVE YOU!

You have been such an inspiration ... To the entire 2004-2005 Fighting Illini basketball team, there are no words to say, but keep on keeping on and follow in the tradition set forth this season. We remain loyal and look forward to all the success of years to come.

You have been such an inspiration ... To Coach Weber and his staff, God bless each and every one of you. Your devotion and leadership has been evident in every game the team has played. These young men have benefited profoundly from your wisdom and leadership. There can be no higher praise than to witness the effect you and these young men have had on a campus, a community, a state and a nation.

The basketball team must be applauded even more for their persistence and courage, as well as their expertise in the games that gave us all some of most thrilling sports moments ever! Thanks, guys! You were marvelous! I'm still recovering from the Arizona game. I thought you might be able to do it again but, oh well ... You were wonderful in the attempt to beat NC. Dear Fighting Illini Basketball Team,

You don't know me, but I feel as though I know each and everyone of you, and you all fill a warm place in my heart. Between us, my husband and I have five degrees from the University of Illinois and are "dyed-in-the-wool" Illini basketball fans. We have followed the team all these years. ... We started as freshmen at the U of I in 1973. Never have we had so much fun following our team as this year.

I want to congratulate each and every one of you on an OUTSTANDING basketball season. It was truly glorious! You have made the last four months zip by so fast that I can barely remember them. The long, dreary days of winter just were not even noticed this year as we looked forward to each game and the sports page stories in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the days following the games.

Having you come to St. Louis — where we migrated after our last U of I degrees were obtained more than 20 years ago — to play in the Final Four was a dream come true. We were at the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday night and screamed as loudly as any fan when you so soundly defeated Louisville. Unfortunately, we didn't have tickets for last night's championship game, but we watched it in our neighborhood eatery's private party room on the big screen with other alumni, about two or three miles from the Dome.

We were there at the Missouri Athletic Club breakfast last Friday when Bruce was awarded the Henry Iba "Coach of the Year" award, and we ran into James, Brian, Warren and company and Luther's family, including Aunt Brenda, on Sunday afternoon downtown in Kiener Plaza and in the lobby at the Marriott. Thanks for the autographs and the memories. We'll cherish them forever!

We love you all and wish you all the best in your future careers — basketball and other.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful season. You guys are the greatest — no matter what anyone says or what the score might have said. The records you set, the things you accomplished are amazing! Thank you for giving my son someone to look up to — you all have tremendous character. Your ability to play as a team is incredible. It's what basketball should be. You should all be very proud of yourselves. I know you are disappointed, but your fans are still behind you 100%! I know that the icing on the cake would have been the national title, but we are all still so proud of you. I'm sure there will be many people going through withdrawal symptoms with no games to watch! For those of you who are graduating, you will be greatly missed. You have left indelible marks on our hearts. To Fred Nkemdi, we pulled for you all year and were excited to get to see you play even for a few seconds. You will also be missed. To Roger Powell, thank you for being a role model for my son. Your constant witness is such an inspiration. My son thinks you are awesome. He wants you to know that you've made a difference in his life. Also, God is still in control. To those who may go on to other endeavors, we don't want you to go quite yet but wish you the best in everything you do. To Coach Weber, you said that the UNC coach is a class act. You would know because it takes one to know one. You are an incredible coach. Thanks for seeing that it goes beyond the ability of the individual players to make a great team and for instilling in these kids more than just wanting to win but also being winners in their actions. Thanks again for such an incredible ride. Can't wait 'til next year!

As a four-year member of the UI basketball band, I learned the meaning of spirit and support for your team 100% of the time. Now as a high school band director, I try to instill the value of what I learned from my time in Champaign in my students during sporting events. I am still 100% true to my Orange and Blue and proved it by wearing my bright orange "Illinois" shirt today. When other teachers ask how I could wear this shirt today (the day after the championship game), I know that they don't know the true meaning of the word "loyalty."

This team will be remembered as the greatest basketball team in the history of Illinois basketball. But that will be so not simply because of the winning record or the individual statistics. Even more important, this team will be remembered as a "team" in the strictest sense of that term — a group of guys who played as one, and did so with good sportsmanship and class. Thank you for a basketball season we will never forget and for representing the University of Illinois in such a positive way to the entire nation. Now, you juniors, come back next year and keep it going!

What a game! I have never been so proud of a sports team as I am of this year's men's basketball team. The character these young men displayed all year was encouraging and uplifting — Dee Brown with the consummate smile and love of the game ... Roger Powell with his obvious love of Jesus and the team ... The hard work and never-quit attitude ... and on and on. To Coach Weber and the rest of this quality team, I just say, 'Thank you for a tremendous ride.' You are still the No. 1 team in the country in my eyes. The analysts can look at a few shots that didn't drop and the lack of playing time for James due to some silly fouls or even some questionable calls, but the bottom line is that this is still just a game, and all that really matters is that this team was remarkable. Heads up, men! I pray that the Lord will give you peace beyond understanding to move on without ever looking back with regret on this singular event. Continue to live life, and live it abundantly. You have much yet to offer!

I felt tremendous pride being an Illini given the clear demonstration of tremendous poise, courage, loyalty and unselfishness. ... all character traits which we should find admirable. Congratulations to Coach Bruce Weber and his staff for living these values and serving as true educators through their inspirational leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the Houston Illini Club, a final thank-you to the team, coaches and University for providing a fun excuse to get together frequently over the past several months and to enjoy the camaraderie of simply being with fellow alumni while seeing the team surprise itself through its numerous accomplishments.

Congratulations to Coach Weber, all of the assistant coaches, the amazing players, the energetic managers, the wives and families of the coaches and families of the players. What a memorable season you gave the fans! The words that will always come to my mind when I hear "2004-05 Illini men's basketball team" are: Christian, humble, modest, unselfish, considerate, kind, polite, appreciative, excellent role models and devoted. You did what no other Illini team has done and you did it with style. You are the players and coaches who will pave the way for the younger generation, and you are perfect role models for our children. I feel so blessed to have Coach Weber here in Illinois. When asked about my favorite player, I can't answer — you all have something special! The ride was exciting — let's do it again! Good luck to the seniors! You will all be missed next year.

Dianne
I would like to thank Coach Weber and the basketball team for such an enjoyable year. The players were fun to watch, and I was so proud of the way they acted throughout the year, giving of their time to fans both young and old! They were both proud and humble.

We are so very proud of all of you. Thank you for a great and exciting year. Bruce, we are also very thankful you were willing to come to Illinois. What a great asset you are.

Dee Shonkwiler
Fifty years ago I cheered the Illini in Huff gym, and I've cheered them many times since. But at no time has there been a better team effort or more rewarding season. It would have been nice to celebrate a victory last night, but we have something more valuable: a coach and team whose respect for each other, their opponents and their fans was visible every time you took the court. I hope you understand what a wonderful thing you have accomplished and what you mean to all of us. My orange flag is not coming down today.

Many thanks for all of the thrills and excitement this team has given us this year! Even though the ending is not what we all hoped it would be, it has given us so much to look forward to in the future. All of the effort of the team and coaches this year has been AMAZING. Don't for one second think you're not No. 1 in the hearts of every Illini fan today. You guys are the reason we're Illini fans in the first place. You did us proud this year and gave us more than we could have hoped for. Here's to the future! GO ILLINI!

Thanks to an extraordinary team and an extraordinary coach for an extraordinary effort!

Records were broken and history was made. You raised our spirits and shortened our fingernails. It has been a truly thrilling season. And wow, what a ride it was! Thanks for taking us along.

Best wishes to all of you with wishes for your continued success — wherever you choose to go.

It was a great season. You should all be very proud. You went out and fought hard every game. Keep your heads up high because you are the greatest Illinois team in 100 years. Keep up the good work.

Cindy Jones
Thanks for a GREAT season. You have much to be proud of. This is a very class act. You have shown the country what a TEAM sport is supposed to look like. Be proud of your accomplishments and the sportsmanship with which it was accomplished. You have made your fans proud. Thank you!

Bonnie McGrew
You guys are still No. 1 in my book! You were No. 1 for four months! You won more games than NC. You only lost those 2 games by a total of 6 points. You did yourselves proud! But it's not only your win/loss record, but how you won. Your unselfishness, teamwork, good character. Rev, thanks for your testimony of giving God the glory; Dee and Deron, thanks for being such leaders; James and Jack, I called one of your games in Indy the 'James and Jack show.' Nick, remember those important minutes against Louisville. Luther, you were such an important member of the team. And Coach Weber, you have what it takes. This has been a season to remember for all time!

Christina Reel
You team members and coaches are awesome. You win with honor and pride. You came in second place with the same honorable spirit. We honor your attitudes and leadership through this entire season. Good luck in your careers!

I just want to say that I can't be more proud of the Fighting Illini than I am right now. They are true to my heart. I have been a die-hard fan for years and have suffered through many difficult losses. In my eyes they are winners, they are the best. My words to Deron Williams: Come back, we will win it next year; you make all Illinois fans proud when you play. It's a great moment when you hit those three-pointers, when you fast break, when Roger or James slams. There is no better thrill than watching Deron, Dee, Luther, Roger, James, Jack, Warren, Nick, Rich, Shaun, Brian, Calvin, Marcus or Freddie slam inside. God has blessed us with some truly great players. Illinois loves you, and God bless.

Nation, world — listen up!

Hey Illini, you guys are an amazing team. I had you going to the championship game the whole year. There is NO way any team can beat you when you guys are on your game. (Ohio State got lucky.) Really, when Dee pushes the ball up court, with Deron and Luther on the left and right, man, that fast break works all the time. Also, with James and Roger down low, no one can stop you guys. And a lot of it has to do with the coach. Bruce, you are an amazing coach, especially with everything that happened with your mother. It's obvious you have a great love for this game. She would be happy for you. Way to win v. Arizona, too: 15 points down with about four minutes to go in the game. Deron, nice treys in that time period; how many did you make, like three? Nice way to step things up, Jack, taking the place of James when he fouled out. Nice steals by Dee and Luther, too — you guys are so fast. Well, I just have to say that I love you guys. You are an awesome team. Nice win versus Louisville, and good luck in the Championship against North Carolina!

Matt Pucher
GOOD LUCK! Go fight 'em. Do you the best you can! I'm one of your No. 1 fans.

To Coach, assistants, staff and players, your attitudes and teamwork would surely be used and written up in the nation's book of 'Coaching and The Making of a Great Team,' if there were one. What a fine example of talent and teamwork you have been to the sport of college basketball. It has been so much fun watching what you all have accomplished. >Thank you for giving us so many "fan-tastic" memories!

You have shown everyone all year that success is not only about individualism and looking out for oneself — it is also about hard work, team spirit and commitment, as well as delight. Regardless of what happens tonight in the championship game, you can only be winners. And for that, salutations and congratulations. But do us all another favor: whip those uppity Tar Heels!

The 31,000 fans at the Friday shoot-around is indicative of your following. Each of you is an integral part of a great team and you should hold your "heads" high. Sorry for the pun, Luther. I want to thank Dee for helping recruit some of the present team members. You can't be paid for those recruiting efforts but your payback is the Final Four. You are all very lucky to have Bruce Weber as your leader and coach. I don't think anyone else could have pulled off this unbelievable run. Thanks for the memories.

We have all thoroughly enjoyed cheering you on during the season and hope you come home with the championship. We wouldn't think of missing the game and have worn orange every game day all season. Thanks for giving us a wonderful season, and we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have. We love Coach Weber and appreciate everything his family has done to support his efforts. GO ILLINI!

If you got the picture of Coach Weber and the Smith family in Lafayette you know Braden woke up during the Wisconsin game to pull his team through. The same thing happened when you played Arizona. If you need him tonight, I'm sure he'll be there for you. GOOK LUCK. IT'S BEEN SUCH FUN!

Go Illini! You are the national champions and the dream team. You're awesome. You have made the Midwest come alive. ... What a great feeling. You made it onto my gazebo this year — I gave up on my Easter decorations and left my blue and orange lights up with my "Dee" easter bunny — he was even wearing an orange head band! Coach and team, thank you for a wonderful basketball season and the great warm feeling. Love ya'all.

Gentlemen, congratulations on your tremendous achievements this year. You are the Pride of the Illini. You are representing our University well, with pride and honor. I now live in Florida, and I'm sick and tired of hearing about the ACC and what a great basketball conference it is. Please, go out tonight and play Illini basketball like Coach Weber has taught you. There is no doubt in my mind that you will be victorious. Don't let up, and run up the score on Carolina just like you did against Wake Forest. Let the nation, Dick Vitale and others know that this Illini basketball team is a college team for the ages. Dominate your opponent just like the 1985 Bears did against the Patriots in the '86 Super Bowl. Go Illini! Oskee Wow Wow!

I've been reading and re-reading the comments on this board, and I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to be part of the Illini family — we have the best fans, the best alumni and now the best basketball team in the nation.
