Illini Experience
Making -- and enjoying -- lunch with old friends Avis Crasko ’82 LAS, Judi Bult ’82 PHARM (UIC), PHARMD ’87 (UIC), and Alison Rozema ’08 ACES, left to right, stand with their cooking instructor, Ank (who is adorned in traditional Indonesian batik). The occasion is a private class in Balinese cooking, held in a café garden in Ubud, on the island of Bali. Bult and Crasko spent a couple of weeks in summer 2009 touring Southeast Asia and also paid a visit to Crasko's daughter, Rozema, an employee of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. Local dishes they learned to whip up included ikan panggang sambal matah (grilled fish salad); mie goring (fried noodles); udang campur (prawns with glazed tofu); and ayam bumbu kecap (fried chicken in sweet soy sauce). After a morning of cooking (which included harvesting ingredients from the garden), wrote Crasko, they finally “were invited to sit down and enjoy our tasty creations for lunch!”
