His Own Words: Ringeisen on Retirement
On March 1, Chancellor Richard D. Ringeisen announced plans to retire next fall
from his leadership post at UIS. Listen to an interview with Chancellor Ringeisen,
conducted by Amanda Vinicky ’03 las, ’03 media, ma ’05 paa,
and hear about his decision in his own words. 
Student newspaper The Journal wins several awards
UIS’ student newspaper, The Journal, won several awards during the 2010
Illinois College Press Association’s annual conference, including two first
place honors. The paper’s editorial board received first place for a 2009
editorial on student apathy and social media. Luke Runyon, the current editor-in-chief,
won first place for headline writing.

Josh
Hester describes the Mathare slums he visited in Kenya as the closest thing he’s
seen to “hell on earth.” But the people there persevere; they have “joy
on their faces,” he said. Hester documented his experience in Kenya using
photography and film, and donations collected during a recent exhibit of his
work go to help the people of Mathare. 
In
the fall of 2009, Alfred O. Therkildsen gave a generous gift to enable UIS students
to do research related to The Nature Conservancy's historic wetland restoration
at Emiquon. We thought you would enjoy meeting this donor.
