UIC Team Arrives in Haiti
A team of volunteers from UIC’s Medical Center is in Haiti for two weeks
to help earthquake victims. The team, led by International Emergency Medicine
Program Director Janet Lin, is working with the International Medical Corps,
a nongovernmental organization that provides emergency medical response, at the
University Hospital of Haiti and mobile clinics throughout Port-au-Prince. 
UIC to Offer Region’s Only Online Doctor
of Public Health Degree
UIC’s School of Public Health has launched the Midwest's first online Doctor
of Public Health degree, only the second such program in the U.S. The doctoral-level,
distance-based program will allow public health professionals to pursue their
degrees with minimal disruption to family and work life and without having to
travel to campus. 
Grant to Focus on Helping Foster Children
The Jane Addams College of Social Work received a $929,000 grant to address the
need for effective, accessible mental health services for foster children. Researchers
will analyze methods used by social workers to address children’s behavior
problems in child-welfare settings.

Alumni Authors Series: Poker Pro James McManus
James McManus '74 LAS, MA '77
LAS, writer, poker player and
professor of literature and writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,
will speak at the UIC Daley Library March 16 at 5:30 p.m. His book Cowboys
Full: The Story of Poker covers the history of poker and how it became a worldwide
phenomenon, an arena where men and women of all backgrounds can compete on equal
footing. His other books include Positively Fifth Street, Physical and Going
to the Sun. His work
has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The New York Times and The
Best American Poetry, among others. 
AHS Professor Plays a Role in the Winter Olympics
Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley, MS ’02 AHS, PHD ’07 ED, clinical assistant
professor of kinesiology and nutrition,
will be on hand at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver as the sport psychology consultant
for the men’s and women’s U.S. Olympic Curling teams. Both teams
begin competing Feb. 16.

McNulty
Pledge Expands Opportunities for Asian Studies Students
LAS Board of Visitors member James McNulty ’73 LAS and his wife, Jamie
Thorsen McNulty, wanted to help East meet West when they gave
a $300,000 pledge to establish the James and Jamie McNulty Fund in Asian Studies.
The fund will support the expansion of Asian Studies, allowing students greater
opportunity to study Asia and understand its social, cultural and economic aspects.
