Obama names UIC alumna to science advisory council
President Barack Obama appointed Barbara A. Schaal '69
LAS to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. "Professor
Schaal has long been regarded as one of the top plant biologists in the United
States," said
Mark Wrighton, chancellor at Washington University in St. Louis.

New UIAA Board Members
Six alumni from the University of Illinois joined the Board of Directors of the
University of Illinois Alumni Association at its May meeting in Urbana. The Association
is the largest alumni organization in the United States, with more than 650,000
living alumni from all three campuses of the University -- Urbana, Chicago and

Recovery of global economy discussed at forum
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden gave the closing keynote address at the
fifth annual Richard J. Daley Urban Forum, where the economic role of major metropolitan
areas was discussed. 
Gov. Quinn urges graduates to commit to social causes
In his first commencement address as Illinois' top executive, Gov. Pat
Quinn urged UIC graduates to serve and be a "hero" during difficult
economic times.
