A
recognized leader in the field of cardiac care and research, Dr. W.
Dudley Johnson ’53 COM, MD ’55, pioneered a number of innovative
practices and procedures throughout his distinguished medical career. For example,
he was the first to perform double, triple and quadruple bypass grafts and the
first to show the benefits of aspirin on long-term survival after coronary surgery.
His expertise is valued worldwide – he has lectured in more than 40 nations
and has performed demonstration surgeries in nine countries. Johnson has authored
more than 80 articles in medical and scientific journals and holds a patent for
his method for closing an atrial appendage. A fellow of the American Heart Association,
Johnson has received numerous honors and awards, including the American Association
for World Health 1992 National World Health Day Award for Outstanding Contribution
to the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Commitment to World Health. In
addition, he received the Society of Thoracic Surgeons 2001 Earl Bakken Scientific
Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Practice of Cardiothoracic
Surgery. UIC’s College of Medicine named Johnson Alumnus of the Year in
1972 and presented him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005. In addition
to his work at the W. Dudley Johnson Heart Care Center (which he founded in Brookfield,
Wis.), Johnson is vice president of the Wisconsin Cardiovascular and Health Services
Foundation.
One
of the toy industry’s most innovative minds, Roger Shiffman ’75
CBA is the man behind the Furby and Giga Pets sensations. After selling his company,
Tiger Electronics, to Hasbro in 1998 for $335 million, Shiffman retired from
Hasbro in 2001 only to return to the industry in 2005 with the launch of Zizzle,
a small toy company that develops handheld games, electronic learning devices
and toys tied into popular television shows and films. When not dreaming up the
next toy craze, Shiffman dedicates his time to working with students who may
one day launch innovative products of their own. He serves on the Board of Overseers
for the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Engineering, and helped
develop UIC’s Interdisciplinary Product Development curriculum, which brings
teams of students together to solve product development problems across academic
lines. Shiffman has been named one of the Top 100 Marketers by Advertising
Age and is a member of the UIC Chicago Area Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame
and the UIC College of Business Administration Alumni Leadership Academy. In
an effort to give back to his community, he serves as president of the Shiffman
Family Foundation, which supports non-profit organizations in the Chicago area.
United States Army Reserves Colonel Sandra M. Webb-Booker,
BSN ’76, MS ’80 NURS, is the first nurse to serve as commander of
the 801st Combat Support Hospital. In this post, Webb-Booker provides supervision
and leadership for more than 500 personnel stationed at Fort Sheridan, Ill.,
Bartonville, Ill. and Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. She is responsible for
all matters related to the unit and its readiness to set up a hospital and provide
hospital services if called to serve in a conflict. She has received numerous
honors for her military service, including a North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Award for her work in post-conflict Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia in 1999, where
she evaluated and rendered humanitarian and public health services as chief of
the Public Health Team for the Combined Joint Civil Military Task Force. Other
honors include a Joint Service A Commendation Award in 1999 and an Army Achievement
Award in 2003 and 1990. In her civilian life, Webb-Booker was honored with a
Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois Urban Health Program
and the College of Nursing in Chicago in 2000. She currently serves as coordinator
for the Chicago Public Schools Practical Nursing Program, where she oversees
the only federally accredited practical nursing program in the City of Chicago
and the Pharmacology/Medical Administration program for post-graduate students.
Webb-Booker is also active in the National Black Nurses’ Association, where
she has served as president of the Chicago chapter and as historian for the national
association. She was named National Black Nurses’ Day Honoree in 2000.
