The Council of Alumni Association Marketing & Membership Professionals (CAMMP) Inc. strives to be the premier forum for professional development, networking and knowledge transfer among alumni relations staff members whose duties include membership acquisition and retention and coordination of other revenue generating programs for their associations.

CAMMP began in 1997 as an informal group called the East Coast Marketing Group. This group modeled itself after a similar organization composed of western alumni relations professionals, the West Coast Marketing Group. These groups were initially formed because other professional organizations did not sufficiently focus on the emerging specialty within the advancement profession that addressed alumni association membership and marketing functions. Consequently, there was virtually no opportunity for professional development and information exchange. The first annual conference was held at North Carolina State with approximately 30 participants and four sponsors. We have grown significantly. Our 2008 12th annual conference at the University of Pittsburgh attracted 144 participants and 44 sponsors.

In 2004, the group voted to formalize the organization. The Council of Alumni Marketing and Membership Professionals (CAMMP) became a 501(c)(6) organization in 2005. There are five officers of the corporation elected from among the membership. They are elected for two year terms which are staggered to provide continuity.

We are working toward better communication to our members. Our listserv has been one of the best tools for our business. One policy that should be highlighted everywhere is confidentiality. We discuss (very frankly) issues facing our associations, relationships within our institutions and the good, the bad and the ugly in relationships with vendors and affinity partners. It is very important that this type of information stays within the group. Listserv postings should not be shared – even with our office colleagues – without the permission of the author.

Finally, our listserv should also focus primarily on membership and marketing issues. There are many other great listservs that deal with programming, communications and development issues.

CAMMP is and will continue to be one of the best opportunities for professional development and a forum for exchange of information for and by alumni marketing and membership professionals. As the current president I can honestly say that I continue to learn and grow in my profession because of the knowledge that I gain from all of you. Thank you for all you do for our profession!

David
