Lou Liay Award

Purpose
Established in 1997, this award is named after Lou Liay, executive director of the University of Illinois Alumni Association from 1983 to 1998. The award is bestowed upon alumni of the University of Illinois who have consistently demonstrated extraordinary loyalty, commitment, dedication and service to the UI Alumni Association and/or its constituent and affiliated groups for the betterment of the University of Illinois, and whose name and achievements have become synonymous with their Alma Mater.

Criteria

  • Nomination is required. Nominees must be living at the time of their nomination. Nominations will be considered active for five years.
  • Nominee must hold an earned degree from the University of Illinois.
  • Nominee must be a member of the UI Alumni Association.
  • Nominee must be an individual or couple in whom the alumni, students, faculty and staff of the University of Illinois will take pride and be inspired by his/her extraordinary spirit and enthusiasm in promoting the Alumni Association, University and/or campus.
  • Nominee must be an individual or couple who, in deed or action, reflects and recognizes the importance of the UI Alumni Association, who demonstrates pride in his or her Alma Mater, and whose interest and loyalty are evident.
  • Previous recipients of the Illinois Loyalty Award or the Constituent Leadership Award may be considered for this award.
  • Current members of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees; the UIAA Board of Directors; the Alumni Association Awards and Recognition Committee; and relatives, employers or employees thereof are not eligible for consideration.
  • Current faculty, staff and other employees of the University of Illinois or the UI Alumni Association are not eligible for consideration.
  • Persons currently holding or running for elected state or federal public office in Illinois are not eligible for consideration.
  • Previous recipients are not eligible for reconsideration.
  • The award may not be conferred in absentia; however, it may be awarded posthumously.

Calendar: Deadline for nominations is Sept. 30. The Alumni Association Awards and Recognition Committee will select one recipient from each campus per year but need not confer the award every year on every campus. The award will be presented by the University of Illinois Alumni Association at Homecoming or another Alumni Association event. Should the committee determine the nominee would be more appropriately honored by means of a different award, it reserves the right to consider each nominee for other, more suitable recognition
