Caroline Becker Joss ’84 ACES
Co-founder and designer, Caroline Rose Inc.
Caroline Becker Joss got her start in 1987 with the help of her UI degree,
further studies in fashion and law, and her mother and business partner, Rose
Becker. She now heads Caroline Rose Inc., an Oak Park company that creates clothing
sold in upscale boutiques and major department stores in the United States. A
former board member of the Fillmore Center for Human Services and current president
of the Women’s Board of Directors for the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy
Museum, Joss remains a loyal supporter of the U of I. In 2003 her company designed
and helped produce hand-painted, orange and blue silk scarves to assist the College
of ACES Alumni Association. Additionally, she has worked to bring together fashion
industry professionals and UI faculty and students. Joss is also involved with
the Illini Leadership Council, which consists of UI alumni who advocate for the
University in the Chicago area.

Sheldon B. Rubin ’64 LAS, ’66 VM, DVM ‘68
Former owner and director emeritus, Blum Animal Hospital; author
Dr. Sheldon B. Rubin is an accomplished practitioner of veterinary medicine
who practiced for four decades at the Blum Animal Hospital near Chicago’s
Wrigley Field. Rubin opened Chicago’s first emergency clinic for pets 30
years ago, has made appearances on PBS and “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and
is a frequent guest on national and Chicago radio. Along with writing six books
about pets, Rubin also serves as president of the American Heartworm Society
and president-elect of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. He
served as past president of the University’s Veterinary Medical Alumni
Association and was welcomed back to campus in 2001 as an Illini Comeback guest.

Paul Schrage, MS ’59 COM
Retired Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, McDonald’s
Corp.
A marketing wizard for McDonald’s Corp. since 1967, Paul Schrage was
the first McDonald’s executive to market the now-famous “Golden Arches” into
the fast food restaurant’s ads. Other key innovations Schrage contributed
to McDonald’s included drive-through service, breakfast food, play areas
for children, extra-value meals and the creation of Ronald McDonald. After retiring
in 1997, Schrage rejoined McDonald’s as a consultant in 2002. Schrage contributes
his time as director for three different charity organizations, and serves as
chairman of the board of trustees for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The 2003
recipient of the University of Illinois Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement
Award, Schrage has also established the Paul Schrage-McDonald’s Corporation
Graduate Fellowship in Advertising Fund in the UI College of Communications,
and has served on the college’s James Webb Young Fund and Advertising Board
since 1999.
